Budhanilkantha is a municipality of Kathmandu district, Bagmati Province of Nepal. It is located at the base of  Shivapuri hills in the northern part of the Kathmandu district. It is about 8km from the city. The name Budhanilkantha is related to the Sanskrit word which means “Old Blue Throats”. We can see the largest stone statue of Lord Vishnu there. Lord Vishnu is sleeping in the bed of Nagas in the middle of the pond there. 

According to the elders and the local peoples of Budhanilkantha Temple, the statue was made from one single rock in the Lichhavi period. 

A large reclining statue of Lord Vishnu near Kathmandu is well known as Budhanilkantha. The main statue is a black stone structure carved from a single block of black basalt.
